Released on June 20, 2000, as the artist’s most popular album, White Pony was considered one of the most groundbreaking, artistic statements that transcended the music industry. The album debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 chart in its release week in 2000.
Record sales of the album during Deftones’ music career aren’t publicly available, but it did reach platinum certification, which signifies at least 1,000,000 sales. White Pony ranks 1st out of their 10 albums based on record sales during their career. Deftones have currently held around 900 concerts in their career from the early 1990s to today, spanning most of the world.
Placed into the four genre subcategories of Shoegaze, Nu Metal, Alternative Metal, and Art Rock, White Pony has received numerous positive reviews from music critics and fans over the years. With a critic score of 71 and a user score of 88 on Album of the Year, the album was marked as a “Must hear album”. The album was also ranked 66th out of the Rolling Stones’ Top 100 Greatest Metal albums of all time list.
Initially running at 48:52, with no later releases with any newer tracks, White Pony didn’t have any reissues or remasters until around 2020, with the 20th Anniversary album being their newer reissue. 48:52 is its final runtime.
Being Deftones’ most popular, White Pony holds multiple of their most popular songs. The album’s most popular song, ‘Change (In the House of Flies)’, is their top song overall, averaging around 530,000 listens per day on Spotify alone.
Overall, White Pony is a critically acclaimed musical jewel, with many reviews suggesting the album completely flipped the Nu metal scene, with its angsty/anxious feel. Over the years, Deftones’ popularity has skyrocketed due to social media and other forms of media. White Pony is not only an atmospheric vibe setter, but an anxious and emotional album.
